As a social work major, she feels that everything that is being done at Casa fits perfectly with her major. At Casa San Jose, she plans to work in as many different areas and projects as possible including policy work, service coordination, advocacy, and so forth. She is hoping to understand how this organization works and do her part to improve her skills as a service provider.
Heaven Serrano was born in Long Island, New York but she has lived in Pittsburgh for over 10 years. She is working on her Master’s degree of Social work with the University of Kentucky online and she is in her final year of school.
Most of her work experience relates to mental health, case management, and assisting adults and Seniors. She has volunteered with various religious and social service programs to assist college students, refugees, and so forth. Most recently, she returned in March of 2020 from a mission trip in the Dominican Republic where she had served about a year and a half- that is where she actually became fluent in Spanish!
As an out-of-state Master’s student, she was in charge of finding her own internship placement so she did a lot of research regarding the different organizations in the Pittsburgh area. When she learned about Casa San Jose, its mission and the fact that it primarily serves the Latino population in the city she calls home, she was immediately drawn to it. She has a strong desire to work with various cultures, but she especially loves working with the Latino/Hispanic population. She would like to gain a better understanding of the issues that Latinos face and what is being done to address them, and she is excited to know that the Latino population is bigger here than she had thought! She loves social work and she is happy to use what she knows to serve others.
