The Casa San José Journey
Key milestones that shaped and strengthened our commitment to our mission
Beginnings
The Founding of Casa San José

In 2013, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Baden opened a resource center for Latinos and named it Casa San José (House of St. Joseph). The center was established to serve the growing Latino community in Pittsburgh, providing a space where Latino immigrants could access various services and support.
Sister Janice Vanderneck has been a cornerstone in the creation and development of Casa San José. With over 20 years of experience working with the Latino community in the Pittsburgh region, her vision has been fundamental in establishing this center as a trusted place where Latino immigrants can find the resources and support they need to thrive in their new community.
Formal Establishment
Incorporation as a Nonprofit Organization

In 2014, the Sisters of St. Joseph formalized Casa San José as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with an independent board of directors. This step was crucial to ensuring that the organization’s mission remained true to its principles and to guaranteeing its continuity in supporting the Latino community in Pittsburgh.
Growth and Expansion
Growth of the Casa San José Team

Today, Casa San José operates with a team of 35 staff members—including three Sisters of St. Joseph—supported by more than 100 active volunteers. Thanks to this dedicated team, the organization has been able to expand its reach and become a vital support hub for Latino immigrants in Pittsburgh.
Casa San José now offers a variety of resources, including weekly clinics, summer camps, community meetings, and empowerment initiatives such as “Know Your Rights” sessions. Beyond providing services, the organization has become a trusted advocate, helping community members navigate systems, overcome barriers, and build sustainable lives in Pittsburgh.
