Abigail is from Newtown, Pennsylvania and she is currently a senior at the University of Pittsburgh working towards a bachelor’s in social work and two minors in Spanish and global studies.
She currently works at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital on the unit for individuals with Autism and Developmental Disabilities. During her freshman year, she also had the opportunity to intern at Just Harvest, United Way, and volunteer with Habitat for Humanity.
She heard about Casa San Jose from previous ISAC intern, Emma Larrabee when they had classes together at Pitt. She was really interested in working with the Hispanic/Latino population and she was surprised that there was such a large population in Pittsburgh. She was also looking forward to having the opportunity to use and improve my Spanish.
Her social work major connects with her experience as an ISAC intern because she gets to work in so many different areas of social work such as case management, community organization, advocacy, policy, and social action.
In the future, she would like to serve in the Peace Corps hopefully in a Spanish-speaking country. She thinks that her experience at Casa San Jose will help me to gain a better understanding of the experiences of Hispanic/Latino individuals.
